Tennessee
• Driving is not to be done while asleep.
• Fayette County: You may not have more than five inoperable vehicles on a piece of property.
• In Jonesboro, Tenn., a slingshot used to be classified by law as a deadly weapon.
• In Tennessee hollow logs may not be sold.
• It is illegal for a woman to call a man for a date.
• It is illegal to use a lasso to catch a fish.

Organic Pest Control

Fire Ants

Drench mounds with Liquid Fire Ant Control formula - orange oil, molasses, and compost tea mixture.

Treat the site with beneficial nematodes. These are living organisms and must be used before the date deadline on the package.

Go organic and use the entire basic program. The biodiversity of microbes, insects, and other animals is the best long term control.

Liquid Fire Ant Control - mix one part compost tea, 1 part molasses, and one part orange oil. Mix at 4-6 ounces of the concentrate per gallon of water for treating fire ant mounds.

Preventative maintenance - There are steps that can be taken to reduce the competitive edge of fire ants and as part of an overall organic program to control fire ants.

1. Increase biodiversity. Fire ants are more of a problem in new neighborhoods than in older neighborhoods, where there is a more stabilized ecosystem. When fire ants are forced to compete they become less of a problem. We must do our part to encourage nature.

2. Treating the lawn spring and fall with nematodes. Treat after sunset and follow-up with ½ inch of irrigation. Nematodes are live microscopic worms and need to be applied at the highest recommended rate and in a manor to ensure their survival.

Individual Mound Treatment

3. Treat individual mounds with 1-1/2 ounces of citrus and a few drops of soap as a wetting agent per gallon of water. Treat each mound with one gallon of diluted mixture.

Large area Treatment Program or Bad Infestations

4. When large areas have bad infestations of fire ants, the next step up from the nematodes and citrus drench is applying baits on the whole property at 1-1/2 lb. per acre and one teaspoon of bait per mound. The baits we recommend are the ones containing abamectin because it is derived from a soil microorganism. At low concentrations abamectin acts as an insect growth regulator and when used on individual mounds it is a stomach poison. Baiting should be done in the spring and fall during times of active ant foraging. Test the timing and the bait’s palpability by applying a small amount to individual mounds and watch for a quick uptake. For mounds along sidewalks, house foundations etc. bait is normally required to get effective control, because the ant colony is protected under the concrete.

5. The next step up from the abamectin baits is the chemical growth regulators. These products do not kill ants, they obstruct their life cycle. This process is slow and should be looked at as a low toxic method to decreasing fire ant populations on large properties over a period of several months. Extinguish is a product that has demonstrated good results. As with most baits it is best used in the spring and fall when ants are actively foraging.

Ants in the house

Treat ants in the house by cleaning all problem surfaces with vinegar and water, spray visible ants with orange oil at 2 ounces per gallon of water or 1 tablespoon per quart, and dust the worst areas with baking soda.

Baby talc--a very soft mineral, magnesium silicate. (Not baby powder with corn starch.) It smells good, is non-toxic, matches white window sills better, comes in a handy dispenser and best of all it works! In an ant invasion emergency, even the more expensive body talcs can be used if you don't have baby talc on hand.

Fleas
Organic Control: Orange oil or other citrus products. Flea control requires a comprehensive program. Use banana stalks under decks. The most effective flea control device is the vacuum cleaner which will remove flea eggs, flea larvae and flea food. Put towels down where pets lay and wash those towels weekly. Use natural diatomaceous earth in dry weather and beneficial nematodes when moisture is present or can be applied. Pyrethrum products are no longer recommended..

Insight: FACTS - A female flea can lay over 1,000 eggs during her lifetime. A pair of fleas can produce 20,000 fleas in 3 months. Flea allergy is the most common skin disease of pets. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms. During the cocoon stage they are invulnerable to typical pesticides. The most common flea is called the cat flea. It attacks cats, dogs, rats, chickens, opossums, raccoons, squirrels and other warm blooded animals. Optimum conditions for egg hatching and flea development are 65 to 80 degrees and 70 percent humidity. When it is 95 degrees this summer and you have fleas, the problem may be in the house - not out in the yard.

The secret to controlling fleas is to control the eggs and larvae. They are far more numerous than adults. Adult fleas usually make up only about 2 percent of the total population. Larvae don't feed on animals as do the adults. Flea larvae feed on organic debris, primarily dry blood. That's why keeping the pets and the environment clean is so important.

1. Organic grounds maintenance. Allow biodiversity to reestablish to create competition. Insects and microbes compete with each other for territory and food. When toxic pesticides are used, the competition is reduced.

2. Diet. Animal nutrition is an important part of a comprehensive flea control program. Feed your pets a balanced, nutritious diet of your own cooking or an organic pet food. Avoid processed foods, especially those that contain chemical preservatives. Ethoxyquin, for example, is a pesticide used as a preservative in many pet foods. BHT and BHA are other chemical preservatives to avoid. Vitamin C is a more acceptable preservative to look for.

You can give your dogs food supplements daily - garlic, diatomaceous earth (DE), food-grade kelp and essential fatty acid products. Garlic helps repel fleas and the DE is a natural wormer and aids in digestion. If the mixing sounds too complicated, just use natural food-grade diatomaceous earth daily. Use about a teaspoon for small dogs and cats and a tablespoon for large dogs. For livestock, about one to two percent of the food ration should be DE. It can also be fed free choice along with salt and mineral supplements.

3. Cleaning. Vacuum frequently, rake and sweep dog runs and sleeping areas regularly, pick up and thoroughly compost pet waste. Flea larvae must have organic matter. Keeping the pet areas clean helps to starve out fleas. Remove trash, lumber and other debris that can harbor fleas. It's best to establish a regular sleeping area for your pets and restrict their access to areas that can be cleaned easily and often. Carpeted areas are the hardest to keep clean.

4. Grooming. Bathe pets weekly or as needed but only with mild, non-toxic soaps. Herbal shampoos and neem shampoos are the most effective, but any low-phosphate, biodegradable soap will work. I also like products that use a coconut base. Shampoos containing citrus oil are also effective. Avoid all soaps containing harsh pesticides. Leave shampoo on pets for 5 minutes before rinsing. If not done too often, bathing pets helps greatly because soap kills fleas. Brushing regularly is even better because it cleans and stimulates the natural oils in pets' coats. These oils help to repel fleas and other pests. The regular use of a flea comb is another effective aid. Its small tines remove fleas which can be dipped in a bowl of soapy water between strokes to kill the fleas caught in the tines.

5. Exercise. Make sure the pets get plenty of natural exercise from running and playing or walk them around regularly. It's good for the animals and for you.

6. Pet treatment. Apply herbal powders of pennyroyal, lavender, eucalyptus, and/or rosemary. Pennyroyal is too strong to use on cats.

Diatomaceous earth, is an inexpensive and effective tool to use as a dry powder on the pet's fur. Don't use it regularly because it's very drying to their skin. Citrus oil products can also help control fleas. Chop orange, grapefruit or other citrus skins or cut them into small pieces, then place in a pan of water. Simmer 15 minutes. Cool thoroughly. Pour into the animal's fur and cover the skin thoroughly. Pay special attention to areas that are hard for the pet to reach. All other forms of citrus also work but oranges seem to work best. This treatment is effective for skin rashes caused by flea bites. Commercial citrus products are also available.

7. Indoor treatment. Treat infested carpets with diatomaceous earth or boric acid, but don't overdo it. For heavy infestations spray D-limonene (citrus) products on carpets and furniture. Baking soda dusted on carpets will also help. Dirty, infested carpets should be water extraction cleaned or completely removed from the house.

8. Outdoor treatment. Dust or spray diatomaceous earth and pyrethrum on infested areas. Light dusting is better than heavy globs. In liquid sprays, add 2-4 tablespoons of DE/pyrethrum to 1 gallon of water. Use about 90% DE and 10% pyrethrum. Use only as needed to avoid killing beneficial insects. Concentrate on dark, damp spots where fleas hang out. DE and pyrethrum are non-selective and like all dusty materials can cause problems if breathed heavily. Citrus oil, molasses, manure compost and garlic are even more effective and less toxic. Apply beneficial nematodes to the entire property and keep the treated areas moist so that the microscopic worms don't dry out and die. There are several brand names of beneficial nematodes. Nifty Trick: Before you go to bed, take a shallow container and fill with water; place a drop of dishwater soap in the water (do not let it suds up) and put the container in the middle of the room. Place a lamp or other light where it will shine on the water in the container. When you get up the next morning, you will notice a lot of fleas in the water. They are attracted to the light and will jump in the container. The soap makes it impossible for the fleas to float and swim to the sides of the container to jump out, therefore, they sink and drown. Always flush the water, as fleas can revive when out of the water.

RECIPE of the Day - 5/24/2007

This is one of those really delicious, impressive desserts. It has real butter, cocoa, coffee, heath bars and whipping cream. This is good on so many levels - whether you're a chocoholic, coffee-head (like me) or you just love a good dessert; it's definitely worth your time.




6-Layer Toffee Torte

2 2/3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup cocoa
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup coffee -- hot
1 3/8 ounces heath bars
2 cups whipping cream
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon coffee instant
1 teaspoon water -- hot

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 3-8" cake pans.

In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, butter, buttermilk, cocoa, baking soda, vanilla, salt and eggs. With mixer on low, beat just until mixed, scraping sides
with spatula. Add coffee to bowl. Increase speed to medium; beat 2
minutes. Pour batter into pans.

Bake 25-30 minutes. Cool cake in pans on racks, 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely. While cake is cooling, chop Heath bars. Reserve 2/3 of the heath bar.

In a cup, dissolve 1/2 tsp instant coffee with 1 tsp hot water. Cool. With serrated knife, cut each cake in two, making 6 thin layers. In a bowl, beat whipping
cream, brown sugar and cooled 1 tsp of coffee until stiff peaks form.

To assemble cake, place 1 layer on plate; spread with 1/2 cup whipped cream. Sprinkle with 1/5 of the remaining Heath bar. Repeat layers 4 more times. Top with last layer of cake. Thinly spread whipped cream over top and sides of cake. Gently press reserved 2/3 of the Heaths onto top and sides of cake. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Repellent Spray
1/2 cup fresh spearmint leaves
1/2 cup green onion tops
1/2 cup horseradish roots and leaves
1/2 cup red-hot peppers
2 tablespoons liquid detergent
Water

Blend spearmint leaves, onion tops, horseradish and peppers with enough water to cover the mix. If the blend is too viscous, add more water and blend again. Strain and ad 1/2 gallon of water. Add liquid detergent.

To use, dilute 1/2 cup of Repellent Spray in 1/2 gallon water in a sprayer. Store the unused portion no longer than 3 days.

Leaf Glosses
Put a few drops of glycerin on a cloth and swab the leaves with it. Glycerin is not a dust collector.

Remedy for Sick Ferns
Mix 1/2 cup salt with 6 pints lukewarm water. If ferns are infested with worms, stick matches into the soil, sulfur end down. For an ordinary size plant, use four matches; six for a large pot.

African Violet Food
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon Epsom salt
1 teaspoon saltpeter
1/2 teaspoon household ammonia
1 gallon water

Use this solution once a month.

Aphid Chaser
Chop shallots or green onions with an equal amount of water in a food chopper. Strain the mixture and spray it over rose bushes.

RECIPE of the Day - 5/23/2007

Sun-dried tomatoes are great in so many dishes and this is no exception. The lemon essence basil complements the acidity of the tomatoes and the parmesan gives it just the right finishing touch.


Pasta with Chicken and Sun-Dried Tomatoes

¼ cup olive oil
3 large boneless chicken breast halves, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove, chopped
½ teaspoon lemon essence basil
1 carrot, peeled, cut into matchstick-size strips
¼ cup finely chopped drained oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
12 ounces fettuccine, freshly cooked
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan

Heat oil in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and sauté until brown and cooked through, about 6 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer chicken to large bowl. Keep warm. Add onion, garlic and basil to skillet and sauté until onion is tender, about 6 minutes. Stir in carrot and sun-dried tomatoes and continue cooking until carrot is crisp-tender, stirring occasionally, about 2 minutes. Transfer mixture to bowl with chicken. Add pasta and Parmesan and toss well. Serves 4.

Heat flows from a warmer to a cooler body, except in the case of a cat, all heat flows to the cat.

4 - Law of Cat Magnetism:

All clothing attracts cat hair in direct proportion to the degree of color difference between the cat hair and the fabric color.

5 - Law of Cat Stretching:

A cat will stretch to a distance proportional to the length of the nap just taken.

6 - Law of Cat Sleeping:

All cats must sleep with people whenever possible, in a position as uncomfortable for the people involved as is possible for the cat.

If you don't see new postings early in the day, please be patient. Our daughter has a virus and has been feeling really lousy lately. When you have a little one at home and they feel less than wonderful and have a fever as well, sometimes things don't get done.

It seems like I'm the one that always feels lousy lately with the pain I have had from the adhesions, but it is amazing what you can do when you have a child that is very active and needs you to be "on" and "going full steam ahead" all the time. The Lord gives you strength and endurance that you didn't think you had in you.

So, hopefully I'll be able to have your postings for you on time, but if not - just know I am trying my best.

Oregon
• Beaverton: You must buy a $10 permit to be allowed to install a burglar alarm.
• Canned corn is not to be used as bait for fishing.
• Eugene: It is illegal to show movies or attend a car race on Sundays. It is legal to conduct a horse race or a symphony concert.
• Hood River: Juggling is strictly prohibited without a license.
• In Oregon anyone with a bad reputation is prohibited from distributing malt beverages.
• It is illegal to buy or sell marijuana, but it is legal to smoke it on your own property.
• Just to let you guys know. there is a law in Portland, Oregon saying that it is illegal to own bolt cutters but yet they sell them in all the local hardware stores. One of our friends got pulled over for carrying a bolt cutter down the street and the police took it away from him saying it was illegal for him to have. (Reader Submitted)
• Ministers are forbidden from eating garlic or onions before delivering a sermon.
• No more than two people may share a single drink.
• One may not bathe without wearing "suitable clothing," i.e., that which covers one's body from neck to knee.
• One may not box with a kangaroo.

Home Gardening Recipes

All-Purpose Tree Fertilizer
3 parts cottonseed meal, soy meal or blood meal
2 parts finely ground raw phosphate rock or steamed bone meal
3 parts wood ashes, granite rock or greens
1 part colomitic limestone

Mix all materials. Apply 1 pound of fertilizer for each foot of the drip line diameter of the tree (3 feet = 12 pounds).

Fresh Flower Preservative
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons cane sugar
1 quart water

Mix well. Cut stems of flowers on a diagonal. Use this solution instead of water for fresh flowers. The vinegar inhibits the growth of organisms and the sugar serves as food.

Houseplant Mix
1 quart finely sifted topsoil
2 quarts finely sifted compost or high-quality leaf mold
1 quart coarse builder's sand, perlite or vermiculite or
pre-moistened peat or sphagnum moss
1/2 cup dehydrated cow manure or 1/4 cup dehydrated poultry manure

Put 1 inch of loose gravel at the bottom of the container for better drainage. Apply Manure Tea according to needs of the particular plant.

Seed-Starting Mix
1 part finely sifted topsoil
1 part finely sifted compost or high-quality leaf mold
1 1/2 to 2 parts vermiculite, perlite or coarse builder's sand

RECIPE of the Day - 5/22/2007

I love just about everything that is lemony. This is a great quick bread that gives you a subtle lemon flavor with a lemony glaze to top it off. It is really delicious.





Lemon Quick Bread

1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. cream
1/2 c. butter, melted
1 1/2 tsp. grated lemon peel

Glaze:
1/4 c. lemon juice
1/3 c. sugar

In a large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a small bowl, beat the eggs with the cream, butter, and lemon peel. Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients and mix till just blended. Pour batter into a greased and floured 5 x 9 inch loaf pan. Bake for 40-45 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

About 20 minutes before the bread is finished baking, prepare the glaze. Mix the sugar and lemon juice together in a small saucepan, and heat over medium high heat till the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat.

When the bread is finished baking, poke numerous holes to the bottom of the loaf using a bamboo skewer. Drizzle the hot glaze over the top so it slowly soaks into the bread. Let cool in the plan for 15 minutes; remove from pan and cool on rack.

Oklahoma
• Alfalfa Bill Murray was a legendary legislator in Oklahoma around the turn of the century who became speaker of the house and governor. He was also a tall fellow, and nothing ticked him off more than going into a hotel and having short sheets on the bed. In 1908 he had a law passed that required all hotels in the Sooner state to have sheets that covered the bed and had three extra feet of linen to cover the head and feet. The so-called "Nine Foot Sheet" stayed on the books for several decades, until after Alfalfa went to his last resting place.
• A City Ordinance in Oklahoma, states that it shall be unlawful to put any hypnotized person in a display window.
• Ada: If you wear New York Jets clothing, you may be put in jail.
• Anyone arrested for soliciting a hooker must have their name and picture shown on television.
• Cars must be tethered outside of public buildings.
• Dogs must have a permit signed by the mayor in order to congregate in groups of three or more on private property.
• Females are forbidden from doing their own hair without being licensed by the state.
• Fish may not be contained in fishbowls while on a public bus.
• In Broken Arrow, Oklahoma pigs less than 32 inches in length may be kept as pets provided there are no more than two in a house.

Wilson® Tennis Balls

Store valuables. Make a two-inch slit along one seam of a Wilson Tennis Ball, then place valuables inside. If you hide the doctored tennis ball among your other sports equipment, remember not to use it.

Fluff your down jacket in the dryer and reduce static cling. Throw in a handful of Wilson Tennis Balls to fluff the down while the jacket is tumbling in the dryer.

Childproof the sharp corners of furniture. Cut old Wilson Tennis Balls in half or quarters and use Scotch Packaging Tape to tape the sections over sharp corners of coffee tables, end tables, cabinets, dining room tables, and other pieces of furniture that might be dangerous to a small child.

Make parking cars in your garage easier. Hang a Wilson Tennis Ball on a string from the garage ceiling so it will hit the windshield at the spot where you should stop your car.

Prevent a chrome trailer hitch from getting scratched. Slit a Wilson Tennis Ball and put it over the trailer hitch as a protective cover.

Make a walker glide more easily. Cut a hole in two Wilson Tennis Balls and fit them on the back feet of the walker.

Give yourself a foot massage. Roll your foot over a Wilson Tennis Ball.

Make a back massager. Put several Wilson Tennis Balls inside a sock and tie at the end. This is frequently used by the labor coach to massage the back of a woman in labor.

Tidy Cats®

Create emergency traction for automobiles. Keep a bag of Tidy Cats in your car trunk in case you get stuck in the ice or snow. When poured under the tire, it provides excellent traction.

Soak up car oil and transmission fluid. Tidy Cats works as an absorbent to pick up transmission leaks from garage floors. Pour a thick layer of unused Tidy Cats over the puddle, wait 24 hours, and sweep up with a broom. Scrub clean with a solution of detergent and hot water.

Deodorize a garbage can. Cover bottom of garbage can with one inch of unused Tidy Cats to absorb grease and moisture.

Prevent mildew in bathtub. Pour unused Tidy Cats in a flat box and place in your bathtub when you leave your house for a long time to prevent mildew. (Keep the bathroom door closed if you have cats so they don't use it.)

Deodorize a stale refrigerator. Pour unused Tidy Cats in a flat box, place it on the middle shelf, and shut the door for five days.

Provide traction on snow-covered driveways and sidewalks. Sprinkle unused Tidy Cats on the snow-covered walk.

Prevent musty, damp odors in a closed summer house. Fill shallow boxes with unused Tidy Cats. Place one in each room before closing up the house to soak up musty, lingering odors.

Deodorize sneakers. Fill the feet of knee high hose with unused Tidy Cats, tie the ends, and place inside sneakers overnight.

Prevent grease fires in barbecue grills. Cover bottom of grill with a three-quarter inch layer of unused Tidy Cats to reduce fires.
