How to Blow-dry Your Hair for that Salon Quality Look
1. Start with a thorough shampoo and condition. Lather up for 60 seconds, massaging your scalp with your fingertips. Follow with conditioner, concentrating on the ends.
2. Your hair should be damp, not drenched. Squeeze out excess water, but avoid rigorous towel drying - it can cause frizz.
3. Invest in a powerful blow dryer - at least 1800 watts. Always use the nozzle attachment - it directs the airflow and creates a buffer between the scorching heat and your hair.
4. Use a round brush. Choose one with a large barrel for long hair, a medium barrel for mid-length styles and a small barrel for short cuts. If you can wrap your hair around the brush more than two times, the barrel is too small.
5. Work in sections. The pros divide hair into four sections and then work in smaller sections within each quadrant.
6. Aim the nozzle down. To prevent frizz, position the nozzle of the blow dryer so it's aiming down the hair shaft, not up.
7. Use the brush to pull your hair taut. The more tension on your hair, the smoother it will dry.
8. Switch brushes. Get rid of curled ends - switch to a paddle brush in the final minutes of your blow dry.
9. Finish off with a cool blast of air. Use the dryer's cool button. The cold air locks the style in place for the day.
